Another Record Broken

Last Sunday I knew I was going to go for a long bike ride.  The weather was in the upper 60s in February and I couldn't pass up the chance to ride all day.  What I didn't expect was to end up in Durham and end up soaking wet.

When I hit the American Tobacco Trail, part of the awesome Rails-to-Trails program, I figured I was going to go for about 40 miles.  However once I hit the Streets of Southpoint and the city of Durham was only about 10 miles away I thought why not.

At around 2:30 I was only 5 miles outside of Durham and I got a message on my phone saying it would rain in Durham at 4pm.  No problem I thought.  I put the pedal down and got to the Bull City by 3.  I hung out for a minute at the Bulls ballpark and then headed home.  After a few minutes I felt that unmistakable wind that meant rain was coming and coming quick.

It rained on me for over an hour and there was nothing I could do about it.  Luckily I had brought a light jacket just in case I got chilly and so I had some protection.  There was no saving me from the spray of water kicking up from my front tire though and when I rode on one of the roads that access the trail I got a nice concrete particle face wash from all the water.  Even though it was a bit miserable, that was the first real rain I've ever ridden in and got me over that hurdle I've been avoiding.

When I got home my hands were pruned from being wet, my body was sore and soaking wet and I was exhausted.  It was great.  I had ridden 59.2 miles, over 4 1/2 hours and broken my longest ride record.  And the best thing about setting a new record is that I now have a new goal to try and top.
