Fairwell To The Fair

The smell of fried foods is dissipating, the rides are packed away and the cows are back in the fields.  The N.C. State Fair is over.

The annual event wrapped up its 11-day run last night and sadly this year Kelly and I didn’t get to have our date night at the Fair.  Kelly’s trip to Seattle and her uncooperative work schedule just didn’t allow it.  I managed to make it to the fair, which is literally a 10 minute drive from our house, for a Saturday afternoon romp with our friends from Greensboro and their adorable toddler daughter.

The fair is great for people watching and learning how the agricultural community works but really it’s all about eating horrible food.  I made my annual pilgrimage to the Wisconsin Cheese truck to clog my arteries with the gooey, delicious fried cheese nuggets.   They are really tasty but also really heavy.  Unfortunately without someone to split them with I couldn’t really indulge in a gyro or a piece of frozen cheese cake because I thought I might explode.

A grill full of giant turkey legs.
It was a fun afternoon but I was sad I didn’t get to have a date night at the Fair with my wife.  We didn't get to stroll through the fairgrounds watching people attempt to eat ridiculously sized turkey legs or watch the carnies attempt to get riders for their unsafe vehicles of death.  And we didn't get to cap the night off by watching the fireworks over the fall foliage but fortunately there is always next year.  It's one of our southern traditions and I can't wait.
