Oh what a first day.  We set sail last night just after 5 pm (PST).  Before any vessel sets sail for the first time it must perform the Muster (Lifeboat) drill.  Part of my job as a Resident Director (RD) is to assist the crew during these drills, calling out names to make sure everyone is accounted for and then keeping them quiet.  The drill took a bit longer than usual since it was the first time and everyone was a bit antsy.

I feel like I probably looked a bit like the bad guy during the drill.    I told everyone that I'm a nice, laid-back kind of guy except when it comes to the safety of the ship and those of us on it.  Overall I'd say it went really well and I was very happy when it was over because that meant it was time to sail!
We headed up to the seventh deck to watch as Ensenada faded into the night and the ship embarked into the darkness of the Pacific Ocean.  As great as that was to see, it was immediately trumped when Kelly and I took the stairs back down to our cabin.  As we passed the main square of the ship we passed Archbishop Desmond Tutu and he gave both of us a fist-bump!  I've only had two very brief interactions with him but it's easy to tell he has a very happy and wonderful personality.    I'm greatly looking forward to spending more time with him over the next 105 day.
Now there is nothing but ocean ahead of us for the next 2000 until we reach Hilo, Hawaii.
